Dr. Samantha Bise is a writer, educator, and lover of language. She studies where ancient words meet contemporary resistance. Her work traces how the words that built Western Christianity were shaped by empire, patriarchy, and power—and how those same words can be reclaimed for liberation. Samantha writes about what the language of faith once meant before translation, conquest, and comfort reshaped it.
Her forthcoming book with Pilgrim Press, titled “Tongue-in-Church,” reveals how Christian vocabulary has carried the weight of Rome, the hierarchy of men, and the economics of capitalism—and what happens when we dare to speak those words anew.
Samantha is a professor of English and humanities. Previously, she served as an academic librarian, GED teacher, and literacy advocate. She is the co-host of the Church Chatter Podcast, a podcast exploring the surprising linguistic, cultural, and theological contexts behind different religious words and phrases. Weekly episodes can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube.
